It was result dayApril 20, 2026.Across India, lakhs of students and parents sat glued to their screens, refreshing results with hope, anxiety, and silent prayers.Because this wasn’t just an exam.it was the result of years of sacrifice.

Savings carefully built over time.Jewellery mortgaged.Loans taken quietly.Dreams invested into one goal. Threeletters.IIT.

And then came a call.A father from Lucknow Mr. Deepak, his voice filled with both pride and fear, asked:“We spent nearly ₹15 lakh on coaching. My Son scored 99.1 percentile… will he get into an IIT?”That one question reflects the reality millions of parents are living today.

When Hard Work Meets Harsh Reality

Let’s pause and understand what this means.A 99 percentile is not ordinary. It means a student has outperformed 99% of the country. And yet…

  • Over 15 lakh students appear for JEE
  • Around 2.5 lakh qualify for Advanced
  • Only ~17,000 IIT seats exist

26 students achieved 100 percentiles in Session 2, more than double the 12 who managed it in January. Approximately 2 lakh students scored between 90-99 percentile in both sessions of the JEE Mains put together.Although there is no data on the exact number of students who have scored 99 percentile or above in the Mains exams, there is a rough estimate that 28,000+ students have scored about 99 percentiles combining the results of both Session 1 and 2.

COMPETITION VS SEATS (JEE MAIN 2026)

Metric

Students

Total Unique Candidates (Both Sessions)

15,38,468

Qualified for JEE Advanced

2,50,000

IIT Seats

~18,000

Total Govt Engineering Seats (IIT+NIT+IIIT+GFTI)

~63,000

The cutoff percentile (students who will qualify for JEE Advanced) for the general category is around 93.2 to 94.1 percentile.

The IITs (all 23 of them) collectively offer around 17,385 undergraduate seats, add the NITs (National Institute of Technology) and you get roughly 24,000 more.

That’s approximately 41,000 seats in what most families consider “worthy” institutions, against the approximately 2 lakh students who scored between 90-99 percentile. Based on the high cutoff this year, most of them didn’t even make it to the Advanced stage. There are about 2.5 laKh candidates who will appear for JEE Advanced this year, and only as many as 52,000+ (going by trends of the past 5 years) will proceed for counselling.

So where do the rest go?Students who did everything right, Students who sacrificed their teenage years, Students whose families’ invested lakhs. They are left with uncertainty. Not because they failed. But because the system cannot absorb their success.

The Cost Parents Don’t Talk About

Behind every result, there is a deeper story.A middle-class family calculating expenses.
A father delaying his own retirement.A mother cutting down household needs. All for one belief: “If my child gets into IIT, everything will be worth it.”

But what if that outcome is not guaranteed?India’s coaching industry today is worth over ₹58,000 crore. Families are spending₹8–12 lakh on coaching, ₹15–25 lakh overall investment.

The Biggest question isAre we investing in our child’s future… or just buying a probability?

The Reality: It Was Never a Guarantee

The system has changed. What used to be a clear path is now a crowded race. Even top scorers faceLimited seats, Branch compromises and unexpected outcomes.

A 99 percentile today often meansRank beyond 10,000, No IIT in preferred branch
Alternative paths after massive investmentThe harsh truth?IIT was never a guarantee. It was always a high-risk outcome.

The Bigger Mistake: Following the Crowd

But the real issue is not competition. It is decision-making. Students are not choosing careers. They are following trendsEveryone is taking Science, JEE is the safest option, Coaching is necessaryParents, under pressure, often follow the same path.

That’s why searches like:

  • Career counselling for my child in Delhi NCR
  • How to choose right career for child Delhi
  • Best career counsellor in Delhi NCR for students

are rising rapidly.Because deep down, there is doubt. What if we are making the wrong decision?

The Real Risk: Not Failure, But Wrong Direction

Failure can be corrected. But wrong direction? It costs years.Students who choose careers without clarity often faceLoss of motivation, Academic burnout, Career switches, Emotional stress This is why the need for Professional Career Counselling is growing faster than ever.Because today’s challenge is not opportunity. It is clarity.

The Rise of New-Age Careers: The Future Is Already Here

90%+  Students who are chasing Engineering as a Career are even not able to qualify to write JEE Advanced. This itself speaks a lot. We are fundamentally going somewhere wrong where future job market is evolving rapidlydriven by technology, creativity, and global demand. It is also looking for students with technical bent of mind.
